You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain, What's the best real-life example of this?

Well in a place like the US I'd say it's more about the so called military industrial congressional complex more than the military itself. But obviously that cabal is populated by the contractors, all those "corporations" (in quotes because they are basically public sector institutions; they are funded entirely by the taxpayer, don't actually make 'profits' in the sense that their prices are arbitrarily set by the deals made with politicians spending everybody else's money, or the printed money that is in essence robbing every American who keeps any of their wealth in USD), all those ex public servants who retire into lobbying (as if they haven't ripped off the taxpayer enough), the politicians that empower them, cut their billion dollar checks and who start and perpetuate the wars and the arms deals that keep the ball rolling, CIA obviously plays the game a lot too, and then yes the military. But anecdotally and based on what I've seen in the libertarian antiwar world - there are many in the military (and the CIA for that matter), including those fairly high up in the hierarchy, that oppose the war party and the evil grift they have going with the military industrial congressional complex.

If I had to guess I'd say there's less of a revolving door between the military itself and the rest of the complex than there is between the weapon manufacturers, their lobbyists, the politicians and their staffers. Politicians keep the taxpayer money flowing towards the complex, trusting that when they head over to work for them the next gen of politicians will do the same for them. Hell I'd say the establishment media is in on the grift at this point as well, considering what they did to make Iraq war 1 happen, the way they've continupusly outright lied abput Afghanistan, the way they covered Syria, the cover they gave to the Obama admin in all it's wars (Libya was a disaster of massive proportions, that HRC can show her face in public after that is insane), the way the only time I've ever seen them praise Trump is when he bombed Syria and how they are consistently shilling for the complex as they condemn any attempts to avoid WWIII with Russia and Iran, make peace with NK... The list goes on. It's amazing.

And it's so bipartisan. Trump has surrounded himself with exactly the same kind of hawks that Obama did, very very similar group of people that HRC would have appointed... Granted HRC is way more of a hawk than Trump is, but Trump hasn't really followed through on much of his antiwar rhetoric and seems to be under the thumb of the type of people his supposed nemesis HRC was in bed with... Hasn't lifted sanctions on Russia, continues to allow the atrocity of the Yemen war to continue... It would have been so easy for him to (rightly) call the ongoing wars in Syria, Yemen, Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistsn "Obama's foolish and wasteful wars" - and frankly I think he himself would actually want to do that. But the complex doesn't tolerate that kind of stuff. War must be endless. Same way they don't tolerate any skepticism of support for Israel - look at how this idiot Omar is being treated just for saying Israel spends money on it's political sway in the US. That's undeniably true, but now she's an anti semite. I mean shit, maybe she is, but that's not the reason she's being smeared.

So yeah it's more than just "the military", and I actually think they are the least potent out of all the groups within the military industrial congressional complex. Back in 08 Ron Paul received more support from military vets of the 21st century wars than all the other GOP nominees combined (maybe even all the Dems as well?). This was after he was saying 9/11 was blowback for American foreign policy (also obviously true), and saying that priority number one for him was cutting down the war party big time.

But yeah you're right - don't give up your guns. That much should be obvious to anybody familiar with 20th century history, and understanding of how the state works.
