Emotional Shut Downs at Horse Shows

Take a show break. I get it. I started competing nationally when I was 10, then big eq, nationals, then big jumpers. I was drained, one simple minor mistake and you are screamed at. It’s like walking on eggshells. It was when I broke and (not out loud) thought “f**k all of you, I worked hard for this, my mare worked hard for this, I’m busting my butt in school and work just to be here, we are going to go have fun”. That was the turning point for me. You do NOT have to be perfect, if you mess up, own it with a smile, learn from it. We can only control what we can control. Botch a jump or a move? It’s OKAY. Reflect on it for next time, and reflect on what went well! Take some time, when you are ready you will know, when that is, remember why you love the sport, and go have fun
