Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly Is Out Now

I imagine this will get me downvotes but fuck it. I'm curious.

So, I'm not really a hip hop guy at all. I grew up with punk/pop-punk. I've since expanded musical tastes to include liking anyone from Thrice to Lorde. I'm trying to be more open-minded with music seeing as I'm 23 and a musician myself. So I went to ITunes Store and listened to the samples of each track for this album since there were at least 10 different comments saying it was one of the best albums they've ever heard.

And I don't get it. What am I listening for that separates this from your average hip hop? The first two tracks I sampled, I get lines like "I wanna fuck, imma get my nut." and then "this dick ain't free (really fast rapping), this dick ain't free".

To be frank, it just instantly turns me off to it. I wouldn't say I dislike rap, I just never seem to care for it. Although, I like a few Jay-Z songs, I like some Fort Minor stuff, I like Linkin Park songs that rap. So without sounding like a jerk, what am I missing? What makes Kendrick Lamar so great? Why is his stuff talking about his dick different than someone else's stuff talking about their dick? Is it a mindset I have to get into as a suburban white kid? For instance, there are days where I just want to listen to Bad Religion and NOFX and drive fast, but I have to be in very specific moods to wanna do that anymore compared to when I was 17, whereas I can pretty much listen to bands like The National or The Gaslight Anthem or Coldplay whenever, regardless of mood. There's a frame of mind and an expectation to different music is what I'm getting at.

Is it merely just a matter of different taste or am I failing to appreciate something I am admittedly ignorant of? Like I said, sorry if I'm coming off as pretentious or close-minded, I promise I am genuinely asking as a small town suburban white kid who grew up on rock.
