I've had a consideration like this. One of my current gods is Evolution.

Evolution among homo sapiens did eventually result in the emergence of altruistic behaviors, where someone will risk benefit to themselves and their own genetic progeny or relations in order to benefit someone else that is in no way genetically related. But the bedrock principle of survival in evolution is that the individual takes care of themselves and their own, First.

When you have an Elder wake up and he has a wife and children still in the cult, evolution's bedrock principle dictates that he start thinking about this problem in terms of how he can preserve the future viability of those children. In evolutionary terms, those children are what will carry him forward into the future, after this death. However anxious it makes onlookers that an Elder stays inside, stays PIMO, he is doing what evolution guides him to do.

Another Elder that wakes up and takes the course of pure altruism, and the Elder says, 'I'm going to make a scene, and make an example, and speak in such crisp and cogent logic that the power of my clarity will crack the firmament, and at least some will follow me out of this prison, whether they are related to me or not. I'm doing this for the principle of the thing.' That's noble, but JWs as a group are inoculated against sudden departures from received dogma. JWs are so deliberately stupid (some politely say they are willfully blind) that the strength of reaction they receive from seeing someone turn away is infused into their own narcissist paranoia complex. The deliberately stupid are protected from anything like revelation, scandal, or the scientific method.

So PIMO and glacial microscopic fissures in a very long game is the way to go, because that is how evolution would do it. Carving an existence out of the cult is a longer form of carving an existence out of bedrock. One does not strike the bedrock with a pickax and expect apple pie.
