Fans of Foreign Teams

Let me preface this by saying that I have worked internationally in soccer for years (traveling extensively throughout Europe, Africa, and the Americas) - and it has given me great insight into the mindset of fans the world over. I am probably one of a handful of people in the US that has seen matches in over 100 countries at multiple tiers of each nation's pyramid, and I have seen first hand the habits of fans in more parts of the world than probably 99.999% of fans. I feel comfortable with the following assessment:

I agree with the OP...as an American, I am pretty fucking embarrassed on the state of bitching and moaning by a very small but vocal minority of American fans. Their petty gripes just scream so much fucking elitism and righteousness that it is overwhelming the majority of fans who are just like the rest of the fans throughout the world -- which is to say normal fans that enjoy a good session of banter, beer, and bitching about the state of their national team. It's 90% hipster "look, I know more about football, you fucking plastic" bullshit and 10% general ignorance on the part of that group of fans. Kill off the hipsters, and you remover about 90% of the problem right there. The 10% that remains are probably about the same percentage of idiotic fans that hate life and happiness in general throughout the world.

But Americans - we have an insanely disproportionate number of hipster-douche canoe fans in our ranks, mostly due to the 90% hipster "I've been a fan for years" component of the very vocal and very shitty minority of fans. The OP makes a post about how much bitching there is about what kind of fans are cool (HINT: All fans are cool if they don't detract from the match, the club, or the experience which is a very hipster/douche canoe thing to do.)

...But then the OP goes and edits his post, and he doesn't realize that he has become a serious part of the problem he so eloquently wrote against...

...The OP edits his post to clarify his belief: namely, that people who support a foreign club and belittle the MLS are idiots (HINT: those people are not idiots, and are just as entitled to their loyalties towards their clubs as anyone else).

The MLS has a fair number of flaws, and fans of the game (and the MLS) are free to point them out. The DP, the "Discovery tag", the superdraft, etc. -- it's a severely flawed system that doesn't reward clubs that do their due diligence by establishing their own rights to a player by way of scouting, development, or by discussion. I belittle the MLS on a pretty frequent basis, as their are a few major issues that I consider legit reasons to belittle the MLS over.

If you want to call me an idiot because I support a number of clubs throughout the world (Burton Albion, R. Charleroi SC, Víkingur Gøta, Gazélec Ajaccio, etc.) as well as a few clubs in America (Minnesota United, Real Salt Lake), and because I am very, very okay with belittling the ML, then you can fuck right the fuck off.

And if you think I am an idiot, feel free. You are no better or worse than me, buddy -- But you are a part of the problem. And if you are a total douche canoe, you have probably quoted something from an article in FourFourTwo, American Soccer, or Howler in a debate about the benefits of the offside trap against a False Nine. (HINT: there are zero benefits to an offside trap against a proper false nine) You can think what you want and call me an idiot, OP. Feel free. But if you are quoting those articles and you are feeling so smug because you know so much about the game, remember that the people that you are quoting might just be the ones you are calling an idiot.

People need to realize that all fans are fans, and all pricks are pricks whether they happen to be fans of soccer or not. Don't like the pricks at the games - then drown out their chants. Don't like the pricks on /r/soccer or /r/MLS - then downvote them into oblivion if they aren't adding anything to the discussion. Just don't bitch about it, because that doesn't change anything. Bitching without action is what makes one a proper bitch, OP, and I already am not well-disposed towards you, you know, since you called me an idiot because I like a few foreign clubs and mock the MLS (which, despite the quality on the field, deserves to be mocked) on a professional basis almost daily.

But at the end of the day, I have a house in the woods that was bought partially with money I made for mocking the MLS on occasion, so I guess I'm a lucky idiot.
