Fat Rant Friday

It's not technically Friday anymore, but I have to rant. I went to a high school football game tonight and the amount of people who were obese - many of them morbidly so - was really sad. I live in the south and I'd say the majority of the adults fell into this category and probably a third of the kids were as well (there were kids of all ages there).

There was a little boy sitting in the bleachers a few feet to my left that was just heartbreaking to watch. He couldn't have been more than 5 or 6 and he was so overweight... I've never seen a kid that young that overweight before. His chest and stomach were huge. He was barely able to make it up to the 3rd row of bleachers where he was sitting (a total of 6 steps to climb) and would just collapse into them and huff and puff. He kept dropping/spilling things because he tried to put them in his lap, but he had no lap. Then when he would drop them, he couldn't bend down to pick them up.

I think he was there with his grandmother. She looked too old to be his mother and made him drink water and refused to buy him junk food. I felt really bad for her, too, having to watch her grandson go through that.

For that matter, I was sitting right by an isle and I heard a lot of people groan and complain tonight about climbing the bleachers.

And there was so much junk food sold at concessions. I know, it's a Friday night football game, and the food is actually cheap (contrary to what you would expect), but the game doesn't start until 7:30. For most people, that's plenty of time to have dinner first and there are no rules that prohibit people from bringing in their own food/drinks either, so packing something healthier is also an option. No one has to buy four fully loaded chili dogs and a plate of nachos. If it's an occasional treat, fine, but it clearly wasn't.

It did feel pretty good to be sitting in those bleachers almost 100lbs lighter than I was last football season, though. I didn't feel embarrassed or like a freak anymore, but at the same time, I still need to lose 65lbs... I shouldn't "fit in" with the normal crowd yet, either!
