Google Home comes back as a set of smart home developer tools

I work in software engineering, and I had a look at the progress of Matter on GitHub. I was surprised to see so many different developers contributing to the project, including open source developers and lots of Apple developers.

This is unusual to me as far as open standards go. Usually it’s one company that pushes for the standard, but it looks like lots of different companies are providing support at the same time.

As this article mentions that the Google Home SDK compliments the Matter API, I can only imagine that that means that it’s intended as a layer of abstraction to bridge current Google branded devices to the new Matter standard.

This gives me a small glimmer of hope for the future of IoT as far more COMMUNICATIVE with each other. Imagine using the Google Home SDK to one day connect a Nest Doorbell to Apple’s ecosystem.
