Is there actual fighting or is this just a bunch of drama drummed up by nations and the media ?

Both, its best to think of this in the context of two other recent coups in Turkey and Ukraine.

The Ukraine coup became extremely violent and lead to its elected president fleeing the country which allowed the finishing blow from the media campaign to brand the regime illegitimate.

Turkey coup in 2016 on the other hand had an orchestrated operation to attempt to seize power peacefully with tactical military force but their president Erdoğan reminded in country and never allowed a media campaign to delegitimize his control.

With Venezuela we are seeing the media campaign against Maduro continually pushing that his flight to cuba from the turmoil is imminent but Maduro himself seems committed to staying in country with the substantial control he still has.

Its safe to say the powers that want Maduro removed are willing to escalate the violence because any reprisal validates their effort and ostracizes Maduro further. What they need is for him to flee the country to succeed.
