Hamplanet Florist Gets Burnt

No business is obligated to provide services in absence of a law requiring it. It may be in their best interest to provide those services but you can't say that because they have bad practices that they can't have those practices. You ask what`s the point of being in business if you turn people away.

Do you have a degree in economics or finance? It might actually be good business to discriminate baased on sexuality.. Imagine you own a florist like this, and that given your capital investment you are maxed out on employees/storefront (i.e. your marginal revenue is equal to your marginal cost) and you are getting a return on your capital that is equivalent to other possible investments. At this point you no longer want any more customers because to increase your flower delivery service it will cost more to hire an extra employee than the revenue generated by additional flowers sold and delivered. To make more money you have to figure out how to raise the price of the flowers without causing a drop in sales such that total profits fail. I imagine the flower market is very competitive, who really cares where you get your flowers from. Therefore small price changes will affect total sales (and therefore profits) by a large amount. If however the customer base in Indiana is extremely bigoted, this florist may be able to stand out from other stores by adopting this discriminatory practice. The market might even actually be made of two distinct types of customers with their own demand schedule. Rich people might be more bigoted and more willing to pay for flowers that come from this florist. Their demand elasticity might also be less elastic meaning they don't react to price changes as much as poorer people do. Given that in Indiana poor people make up a greater part of the minority population, the florist doesn't give up as much of his total sales because poorer people buy less flowers.

Many businesses have poor operating models. They are badly run. Are you saying they have an obligation to be run better?

You also have a completely arbitrary definition of freelancing and business. I assume by business you mean brick-and-mortar, or at least that you take orders as they come?

You are arguing that the florist should not be allowed to conduct their business as they choose because it's a bad (not morally but financially) practice.
