Is Hillary Clinton a feminist icon?

Clinton represents the progress women are making and should have been making for quite some time - in the United States. Her presidency will definitely be a watershed moment for American women.

However, should she be a feminist icon? As in worldwide, looked up to by feminists everywhere? I'd politely invoke the idea of American exceptionalism and disagree. I don't think Clinton's more feminist than the average Scandinavian. I would argue anyone on the left is more feminist than she, since Democrats are centrists and not leftists. This would be a matter of policy, and we haven't seen hers yet.

It's clear that being a female head of government isn't enough. American feminists aren't celebrating Sarah Palin or Carly Fiorina. They don't seem to care about Thatcher or May in the UK. I'd find it strange for a girl in Scandinavia to look up to Clinton before Brundtland, Solberg, or Thorning-Schmidt. I can't imagine German women fawning over Merkel in the same way (because I know many don't).

None of this changes anything though. The answer is "yes" if it's matter of fact. If it's a matter of truth, time will tell.
