In most states, killing someone who invades your home will result in a shit load of legal trouble, so the recognizable pump of a shotgun is a good deterrent, and they will also recognize it when it is pointed at them and hopefully haul ass out of there.

Another thing is that if you just pepper them with bird shot, you lower the chance that those on the jury that want to say shit like “he could have just shot them in the leg.”
