How to approach this salary adjustment request.

You ever go to dealership with a nice print out from KBB stating what your car is worth on a trade in only to have dealer laugh in your face and say: "Well, if KBB is offering this kind of trade-in for your car, you should try to sell your car to directly to KBB".

I think in this case, you have two options: allow some arbitrary statistic rule your pay... or find some other job that actually places value based on what you do and how you contribute, vs. "what we think you're worth". The job market now is hurting for qualified candidates and if they can afford to dick around with this silly nonsense, they can afford to hire and train and hope for the best with someone else - probably in their minds cheaper than paying you fairly.
