How did you react the last time someone insulted you?

I went into one of the "bays" (kind of sort of "technical" term for the shelving areas where we keep the medication in the pharmacy) and tried to compose myself so I wouldn't cry.

The registers that we use are pretty old so it kind of slows down the whole checking out process, particularly if you decide to use cash; the drawer takes eons to pop open.

So obviously this one woman was in a complete rush and wanted to use cash. She kept trying to speed up the whole process, getting more and more frustrated the longer I "made her wait." But you can't speed up register generated prompts if the system is slow.

So while I was waiting for the drawer to open she said "Well I just want to know why you're standing there acting so retarded and slow."

I was so shocked and replied as calmly as I could that "I would appreciate it if she were a bit more polite with me." Couldn't think of anything else to say. She then went on to retort that she would appreciate it if I "Used some Blistex" before storming off when I gave her the shopping bag.

I know they probably seem like silly insults to some people, but one of my biggest "weaknesses" just so happens to be how I perceive myself both in terms of intelligence and appearance. I used to never think I was "smart enough" or "pretty enough," and that mindset controlled me for many, many years. I've become a lot better with accepting myself.

But hearing someone else tell me that I was "retarded" and that my appearance was somehow lacking ("use some Blistex") really hit too close to home.

TL;DR: Almost cried. Sometimes seemingly random, standard insults can hurt a person more than you think.
