How to make the World Championship more competitive with almost no changes to the format

IMO the clearest solution to me would be to add a step.

If you're seriously concerned that 3rd place teams are getting dropped a little too hard for equal performance to the #2 seed but with 1 or 2 more errors, then have the 3rd place team from each group (A vs B, C vs D) play a redemption bracket where the winners of each series play in the quarterfinals, and give the best (or 2 best teams) with the best group play receive a quarterfinal bye.

Let's use 2016 to help explain my hypothetical because it sound a bit dense.

the 4 third place teams in each respective group were CLG, IMay, AHQ, and TSM. With the redemption bracket, CLG would Face IMay in a series, and TSM would face AHQ in a series. And with 2 byes, the winners of each series would replace SSG and SKT in their respective quarterfinal slots. For the sake of hypothetical AHQ and CLG win their serieses, the quarterfinals now would be CL Gvs RNG and AHQ vs C9 in addition to the 2 existing serieses ROX vs EDG and H2k vs ANX

I like the concept of a redemption bracket personally, but at the same time I could see why it would be a non starter seeing as how byes used to be a part of worlds back in like S2 or S3 iirc (I'm relatively new to esports), but it would also give the fans more games, and it would also make near every game in the group stage matter because there would be a bye on the line as well as giving teams in the bottom of their group something to play for. I personally dont like the idea of a team like, say, Splyce, having nothing to play for besides a spoiler moniker. I'd rather have a team go 0-3 the first week and not be all but matematically eliminated and just start trolling week 2. But that's just me
