IamA 911 Dispatcher and EMT AMA!

I thought I'd share a story for you since you asked this question: When I was in high school I house-sat for a woman in my neighborhood while she was on vacation. Spent the night there because I didn't have a car back then and walking to/from to take care of her animals was a pain.

Woke up at 1am to her dog howling bloody murder, see someone sneaking around the driveway. Thought maybe I was seeing things, then suddenly they are BANGING on the front door, like they're trying to break it down. Get on 911 freaking the fuck out while this person is banging on the door over and over, I was crouched down in a ball in the bedroom wondering if police would get there in time.

Honestly, it's a blur - but the dispatcher was very repetitive. She kept asking me the same thing over and over, as if to calm me down. What's your name again? Can you spell it? What street? Is he still there? Can you hear anything? Who is the homeowner again? Spell her name. Are the lights on?

I guess asking me questions she knew I could answer inbetween the "scary" ones helped me focus? I don't know. Honestly I think she was just killing time/distracting me waiting for something to happen.

If you want the ending, it's rather anticlimactic: Turns out it was a POLICE OFFICER at the door. He had parked his car out of view of the house, no lights, alone, did not once identify as police...trying to serve a warrant to the homeowner's adult son (who did not live there, but it was his last known address). The guy got mad that I didn't answer and I "should have known" because he shined a flashlight into the bedroom?? It was a bullshit story. My guess is that particular cop had a grudge/beef with the son off duty and was coming to scare or threaten him or whatever else and it backfired when he realized he was terrorizing a 14 year old girl.
