If you could give a total beginner some advice what would it be?

Enjoy it if you do and keep your head on your shoulders. Its a video game. I knew a couple, a bit older, their relationship was based in gaming and a big part of that was wow. He was diagnosed with cancer and died shortly after diagnosis. She wasted no time with family mourning and details. She felt the need to keep up with her guild. Maybe it was her coping mechanism? Thats what I told myself. Unfortunately what I really saw was an addict. An addict that was letting an anonymous online community dictate her reality for her. Dramatic, I know but it always stuck with me. So much so that my gaming name has been a take on the guys online name who died of cancer. Wow isn't important. At its best, its a virtual world you can relax to for a couple hours a day. At its worst, the competitive and anonymous nature can quite literally take over your life. If you don't have the oversight and self awareness to realize and manage that, then gtfo.
