'The Iron Giant' Director Brad Bird says that re-release talks with Warner Bros. are happening

There's a lot about that movie I like, but it has some very basic storytelling flaws that seem totally amateurish. Disney may have been at a low ebb at the time, but I have no idea how they came to some of those choices. Was the script a first draft?

The psychic pig, for starters. That pig takes up the entire first act of the movie. It is the MacGuffin that drives the plot. Villain wants it, hero wants to keep villain from getting it. Comes to nothing. The pig ultimately has nothing to do with the plot. Does anyone even remember it exists after the film's halfway point?

Then there's Eilonwy, Disney's Forgotten Princess. Or is she a princess? She says she's a princess. My six year old cousin once told me the same, should I bow in her presence just in case? There's no corroborating evidence to her princesstude. The Horned King calls her a scullery maid, and I think he has a point. Apparently in the book (which I've heard is good) she IS a princess, but her kingdom is so poor she works as a maid. That would have been nice information to have somewhere in the movie.

Taran himself is the single most bland protagonist a Disney movie has ever had. I'd say more about him, but I'd have to remember some things about him first.

Then there's Fflewddur Fflam and typing that name on a tablet just made my autocorrect commit seppuku. Who is he? Why is he there? Just what in god's name is up with his lute, which breaks a string every time he lies? Again, apparently there are answers in the book, but I prefer to think that this is an Alternate Universe and his lute is made out of Pinocchio after Geppetto got tired of his shit.

Finally we have Gurgi. If Jar Jar Binks had hairy balls, they would be Gurgi. I honestly would have forgiven this film if (#s "Gurgi had stayed dead, not because I hate him (maybe a little), but because that would have shown a little darkness and maturity. This film already seems darker than most Disney fare because of the creepy villain and terrifying zombies, but nothing ever happens. ")
