As a kid, what's the creepiest thing you ever noticed about another kid's family?

I met a girl in seventh grade, and one time, she asked me to spend the night. I went over there, and her family lived with her grandparents, on her mother's side. The grandfather was obviously (to me) a perv. They were really Christian, doing the whole join hands and pray before meals thing, no cussing allowed, etc. They lived in a nice house, but the food they served, while decent, was barely enough to fill anyone up, there wasn't anything available for second helpings. I just acted like I wasn't very hungry, and ate very little. I ended up giving most of my food to her younger brothers, who were still hungry after cleaning their plates. After dinner, I excused myself to use the bathroom. After I washed my hands and opened the door, I almost tripped over my friend. She was sitting just outside the door, like a guard dog. She tried to play it off, but I knew something was really wrong. I pulled her into her room, and asked her what was going on. It turned out that her grandfather had been molesting her for years, he had only stopped a week before when her mother walked in on him with his hands literally down her pants. I asked why he wasn't in jail. She said that they never called the police, and threatened her with beatings if she ever told anyone. Her mother even told her that her grandfather had molested her mom when she was a little girl for years, and that she just 'forgave' him, and forgot about it. And that she expected my friend to do the same. I asked her if she forgave him, and she said no, that she hated him. I told her she could call the police, or I would be happy to tell my mom, who would call the police to report this. She begged me not to. She then told me that after I left to go to the bathroom, her grandfather made a comment about how pretty he thought I was, and it was clear that he was excited about me spending the night. That's why she was guarding the door. I told her that there was no way he was going to put his hands on me, and if he tried, I knew self-defense, and it would be likely that certain members of my family would make him disappear. She started crying, and said she wished her family loved her like that, and would make him disappear. It was awful. Especially having to walk back out to the living room and pretend like everything was normal in that house.
