List of Mod Authors against Paid Mods

Part 2:

Beyond Skyrim Team

In light of today's developments regarding mod monetization and the Steam Workshop, we'd like to issue the following statement: Beyond Skyrim will not be sold for profit, on the Steam Workshop or elsewhere. We recognize that others have decided to become for-profit mods, and we understand their decisions. At a later date we'll post a more in-depth statement on this issue.

I think it could change the whole way the modding community is. Modding has always been a free and fun environment where you meet new people, you share content, and you just have a good time, and it's something that's always been part of the game hobby. I don't... I don't feel this is right, somehow, it just doesn't seem right to me. I do believe that people should get money for their work, but when we made these mods we know that we were doing this for free. We're not doing this in the hopes of one day we can charge a hundred pounds for it. This is... This whole thing is just they're trying to take it and turn it into a business."

All of my work will remain free. Additionally, it will be Nexus-exclusive. It's not going to be found anyplace else.

While I perceive this mod as simple, but very time consuming (after all this time with working on this mod), I am officially stating here that this mod will always be free of charge to Nexus users. I wanted to mod for fun and learn, not to make a profit. This also applies to all future mods I make for Skyrim and other games.

If I was ever offered to make mods for profit on the Steam Workshop, I would make it a moral imperitive to make sure the Nexus edition would be the same version as its Nexus counterpart without any time delay between the two.

Please note that this applies only to me. I have nothing against other mod authors modding for profit, but it is not for me. This is why I disabled all donations for this account."

While I am not going to bash other authors for going for profit, I will never do it.

I woke up today, to find that Valve has just went ahead with this idea of monetizing mods.

Now my decision on the matter.

All my mods shall be free to download and use, at no extra charge or cost, only from Nexus and TESA, for everyone's enjoyment and enhancement of their gameplay experience.

Thank you, and good morning.

Now, if you have followers or so, fans of your work. What happens if the next thing you release is suddenly locked off unless they buy it? A sticky situation, and one I would rather no be in.

I am not nearly important enough to matter in the modding community, but I've released a handful of modder's resources and have set all of my mods on the Nexus (all of 'em - Skyrim, Fallout 3, New Vegas, ETS2) to be used by others in non-profit work. This will stay that way and I will not allow my (admittedly crappy) resources to be part of paywalled mods. For me, the fun of modding is sharing and offering my meager skills for others to make something awesome with, although with this turn of events I think I'll probably stop releasing new resources. That is all.

INIGO's true home will always be here on the Nexus. You won't ever have to pay to receive important updates or to continue his story. If I do ever upload a paid version to Steam, and I'm not saying that I will, it won't contain anything you can't get here for free. It would just be an optional, pay what you want, way for players to support the mod if they wish to do so. Of course, there's already a better way to do that here on the Nexus next to the endorse button.

This is my personal choice, and I completely understand why some mod authors are making the move to a paid model now that the option is available. Just because you largely enjoy doing something that requires a lot of time and effort, does not mean you don't deserve to be paid for it. That said, while I would love to do this for a living, and money is always tight, I'd rather not exclude anyone from experiencing INIGO.

You didn't need to pay to enter this show and you won't be charged to see it through to the end.

First of all I have put 1000+ hours into Hunting in Skyrim alone. Would it be nice to earn some money back for my time, hard work, and dedication? Of course! Would it be right for me to do so, given the time we here have put in suggesting ideas, bug reporting, and general support? No it wouldn't.

Nexus has a donation button, which a couple of people have used in the past. A lot of mods more popular than mine have the same thing and I know people have donated a fair amount of money to. I believe this is the best way to earn a little pocket money for creating something for the community. At the end of the day that's what modding is. It isn't game development, it's community driven content.

So it seems that with the recent changes to the Steam Workshop regarding the monetizing of mods, a few (very few) mod makers have decided to remove their mods from the nexus and upload exclusively to the Steam Workshop. While others have decided to "time-gate" their mods, releasing to the nexus only after a period of exclusivity on the Steam Workshop. I really don't like either one of these actions and I feel locking mods behind a paywall only serves to hurts the modding community as a whole. But at the same time I think mod authors should have the ultimate say over their own work and so I won't judge others if they choose to monetize something they spent their own time creating. I certainly don't think they are motivated by greed as some people have suggested. Not with the way the world is these days. Making something for other people to enjoy and trying to extract a profit off it is not what greed looks like.

I just wanted to let y'all know that Elysium Estate will always be free to download. I don't currently have it uploaded to Steam Workshop and have no plans to do so. I believe the best system is free modding and sharing our experiences and resources to create better mods. I made this mod for my own use and to create memories for other users. I hope I can continue to accomplish this in the future. Thank you for your support and endorsements. They make my day! Hope to be back working on Elysium Estate soon as I have lots of plans. <3

TESV: Skywind

In light of recent events surrounding the ability for users to sell their mods on the Steam Workshop the TESRenewal team would like to clarify that we will never charge our community any money in order to enjoy our mod. Thank you and have a great weekend

Tamriel Rebuilt

Tamriel Rebuilt will never charge our players any money to use our work, no matter what. Our work and assets are released for free in perpetuity, and we grant users the rights to use our content however they wish. Many of our developers do this out of love for the community, and such (from our standpoint), it would be inappropriate to do so should the oppurtunity present itself.

That being said, we also believe it is a creator’s right to be appropriately compensated for their work if they choose to do so, and if it complies with relevant laws. Developing work, whether it’s for your own game, or someone elses, takes time and effort. It is an art that deserves appreication, just like any other art form.
