I love my boyfriend but have never felt intimacy when we have sex and don’t know how to make the relationship work

Everyone’s “normal” is different, please don’t feel stupid. It sounds like a combination of you being uncomfortable and him not being patient.

Seems like you two have different ideas of intimacy as well. It could be that him watching you was a way to show he’s focused on you and thinks you’re attractive, but to you it felt impersonal/awkward and isn’t what you need.

Either way, him snapping like that when you were making suggestions was uncalled for. I think taking a break to let things settle is a good idea. You were open with him and he not only ignored that, but twisted it into an attack when it wasn’t one. I wish you the best, OP, but you can’t fix anything with someone who won’t communicate.
