LPT: Ask for a raise before giving your 2 week notice.

Went a bit differently for me this week.

A couple weeks back I got an offer from a new company to come work for them for a substantial amount of money and the position of Lead Developer, I already had a first meeting with them and told them clearly that I would be making my decision in the second week of April since by then my mortgage on my house will be finalised and I'd be stable in terms of that.

This week I came back to work after a vacation during christmas and new year and the first day I found out that my colleague has taken a new job and will be gone in about a month and a half.

Since we're currently both just Developers neither of us really had the lead but we all know that it's better for the future to have a lead since we're planning on growing quickly so my boss basically called me into his office and offered me the choice to either stay just a Developer or become the Lead Developer and he gave me time to think about it (which for me was basically think about how I'm going to approach this seeing the new job offer I've got).

This morning (this story started on Monday, got the offer yesterday) I had a quick talk to my boss and told him about the new offer to which he was surprised about the payment in that offer and he told me that he's going to see what can be done and how we're going to approach all of this in the next coming weeks.

So instead of me making a decision to switch or not I got the exact same position offered including the pay raise (not sure how much in total yet but will be quite close at least) and an already stable environment where I'm used to working.

I also asked my boss if I could enter some kind of course/study to help me learn what it is to be a Lead/Manager (since my school never taught me any of that) and he basically told me to show what kind of course and then we'd figure out the ins and outs of that.

Oh and uhm... I'm 21 years old btw.. How the heck did I manage to already buy (yes buy, not rent) a freaking house and get the position of Lead Developer? It's awesome but damn, it's a lot sooner then I could've ever imagined!

If I hadn't had this offer this quickly I would definitely have taken your advice (on my own I would flat out tell my boss about this offer and ask him for a counter offer when I made my decision) since it's quite solid.
