LPT: If you're at an event where alcohol is served and you observe someone who isn't drinking, don't ask them why. They could very well be an alcoholic in recovery.

This has been a real issue the past year for me. I work for a company that distributes alcoholic beverages and anytime I go to a work event people are asking me why I'm not drinking, even if I've told them numerous times I don't drink.

While this gets annoying at times, the real issue is at family get togethers where they do the same thing. Ive explained to them that I had issues with it and just decided it would be best if I cut it out of my life completely, but they seem to think one or two wouldn't be a big deal.

If I had been using cocaine, pills, smoking weed, or something I'm certain it would be completely different and they would be more supportive. Alcohol just isn't taken as seriously as other substances, even less dangerous ones.
