LPT Request: People Who are Happy and Successful with their Career / Degree how Did you Choose Correctly?

I knew what I wanted to do pretty early on ( fire fighter ). I also knew what I didn't want to do; sit in an office all day, everyday, fight traffic to and from work. My parents did that, never seemed to enjoy what they did. Same could be said for most of the other parents i was around growing up. I did know a few fire fighters growing up and it was pretty much the opposite with them. Talked to them about it and I was hooked pretty young. The excitement was definitely part of what drew me. So I figured I would take the classes to get my certifications ( fire fighting and paramedic ) and then apply.

It's worked out well so far. I have a great schedule and get to see my girls much more than most parents. I truly enjoy what I do, I see a bunch of stuff a lot of people don't, I meet a ton of different people and have some interesting conversations ( I like to talk in the back of the ambulance ), and I work with people that I generally like. On the downside, I don't get paid as much as I could in other fields, I work in a large city and my medic unit makes 10 runs a day on a good day ( nights are terrible in my territory, 3 after midnight is pretty typical ) and not every patient I see is as pleasant to talk to as I would like.
