To the men out there who used to struggle with dressing better, what was your experience like? How has your fashion sense "evolved"? Share your journey!

I wrote this long thing answering all your questions in detail, but I don't think anybody but me cares about the details. So here's the quick and dirty:

I was a don't-give-a-shit goth/metalhead, all black everything. Then I got into photography, learned color theory and composition and decided to apply that stuff to myself as well. Went through the "OMG COLORS AND PREP EVERYTHING" phase. Didn't work for me. After 2-3 years of spending tons of money on clothing that didn't really work for me, I'm back with monochrome. But now it's black and white and gray. Yay.

The most valuable insight is actually quite important: HAIR MATTERS. Goddammit, took me ages to figure that out and finally go to a proper barber and say "this mess. fix it and tell me how I can keep it fixed." Serously, even with everything else on point, if your hair is shit everything is shit. This should be stressed much more here.

What are some favorite pieces your current wardrobe consists of? Why are they valuable to you?

Pair of Qasas and a panelled Julius denim jacket. Both work perfectly for me and hard to find. My Allsaints Bale coat was the first piece I got that really resonated with me, and I still love it.

What impression do you give off with your current fashion sense? Compare this to what you described in question 2: How has it changed?

I really primarily dress in a manner that is appealing to me. But details matter to me (a lot), and I am vain enough to want people to notice. And they do. I make a slight point ot ouf finding ever so slightly outrageous pieces (think abstract, futuristic, asymmetric, high-contrast,...) that just say "I didn't just buy this, I selected it very, very carefully."

Vibe-wise I'm going for a detached artsy-intellectual vibe (philosophy grad school, I have to be pretentious). Monochrome works extremely well for this, and my students swoon over me when I wear a black turtleneck. So mission accomplished.
