After Scarsella took a punch to the cheek, the four started walking away from the crowd when Gustavsson got punched. Scarsella said he picked him up by the coat and kept walking north up Morgan Avenue. Scarsella said they saw a group of five to seven protesters break off and come after them.

Gustavsson said he was sucker-punched and fell to the ground, breaking his nose and a tooth. Scarsella picked him up and they continued to walk north up Morgan Avenue. A small group of about six to seven protesters broke off.

"One of them was saying, 'I'm going to beat your ass,' " Gustavsson said.

As the group got closer to Scarsella and Gustavsson, one of them pulled a knife while only a few feet away, Gustavsson testified.

From the testimony on both sides it seems that witnesses agree that the white guys were being chased and beaten. They were saying racist shit but they were more like nerdy losers who were trying to be edgy/pranksters and were attacked.

Even if these kids were totally racist neo-nazi's, which they weren't, they're 4chan nerd larpers. They should've gotten off on self defense. But the riots for that would've been insane. So, that probably influenced the decision.
