So what you did in the past was bad, there's no question about it, but just like you made the choice to get and be better in order to have a better life, he made the choice to keep making bad decisions which landed him in his current situation. When you offered him to learn how to do drugs and shoplift, he had the choice not to say yes, yet he didn't. When you went to rehab on the other side of the country, he had the choice to stop partying and doing drugs, yet he didn't.

He had several chances to stop making bad decisions before it got worse, yet he didn't, because he didn't want to do it. You didn't steal anything from him, but it's easier to point fingers at others for his own shortcomings because then he doesn't have to face the reality of his actions.
