I named my baby the same name as my cousin’s kid and lived to tell the tale

Yeah, it was...different for sure. Not until adulthood did I really realize how chill my parents were about it, and how the aunt and uncle were likely just being stubborn jerks. In today's world, I'm betting it would have been a much bigger deal...although the grandparents/other relatives, never really did let it go. I commented to another reply here, also sharing that my name can't be shortened and there are no possible nicknames either, so at get togethers, she was simply called by the first initial. I know now that was the family's way of drawing their line in the sand since they felt so strongly about it. I'm still whatever about it and we were never close.
