What is a name you've never seen of this subreddit?

That's a newer factor for sure, but I think fundamentally names are a cultural marker and communicator and it's a way to broadcast what social group your kid (and you) are in and what your values are. For my son I went with a western and historical (but really rare) name and I got a lot of grief about it from family members because they wanted something more in-line with names they were familiar with. They wanted him to sound more like he was in our group. That's fair for them to want, and a very basic human emotion, and I think that's what's going on with black parents not wanting names that are "too white", and with white parents not wanting names that are "too black".
