I'll continue to say that the coup was real. It greatly resembled the the failed Valkyrie coup attempted against Hitler in 1944 right down to telling the troops involved that it was training exercise as they secured radio stations and streets in Berlin. What failed in both cases was the attempt to decapitate the head of state. In Hitler's case someone moved the bomb accidentally away from Hitler and in Gollum's case Russian intelligence warned him before the hotel he was staying in could be bombed/rocket attacked. Once the decapitation failed the coup was almost sure to fail as well.

The coup was likely triggered by people finding about the purge list that Gollum was getting ready to implement which lead to the hasty and muddled coup. Additionally Erdoğan had the best and most committed secular officers arrested and removed form the Military back in 2010. Every officer appointed since then has been selected on the basis of loyalty to Erdoğan instead of ability or commitment to the secular nature of the Turkish sate. With the best of the army locked up since 2010 it's not surprising the coup was poorly run.
