Is this normal for hair in a bun or did I have massive hair loss? More info in comments

Is this normal? My hair was in a bun when this picture was taken. Most people who put their hair in a bun or ponytail... don't have THIS many flyaways. I know that some amount of flyaways are normal, but this seems... extreme.

I started with a shaved head and have been growing my hair for about four years. I did have a very stressful life for a while there, and was vitamin D deficient, as well as low iron and protein. There was a period where I seemed to be losing A LOT of hair when washing it. So diet and stress could definitely be a factor. Stress levels and diet have improved.

I am considering shaving it all off and starting again because it doesn't look good and is hard to style. I like a low maintenance lifestyle so I don't want to use products/heat to tame it. But I don't want to find out this is totally normal and be frustrated all over again.
