NYT: childhood obesity isn't a problem, but trying to fix it is

I’ve had anorexia and knowing my weight does cause me genuine lasting distress. i think doctors should allow people with ED history, documented or not, to refuse to know their weight. It’s strange, though, how morbidly obese people have co-opted rhetoric that only really applies to underweight anorexics (i don’t say bulimics, bc i can’t speak to that). eating whatever you want and not caring and overeating and gaining a lot is actually fine and good when you’re underweight! But once you’re weight restored and in a better headspace, you’re usually able to come up with some sense of balance and eye to health. It honestly makes my weight anxiety worse to engage with FA stuff because it’s easy to snark it and go the opposite way. This co-opting en masse of ED recovery rhetoric applied to people who are 300+ lbs (and probably have the exact opposite eating issues) is not good for them and it’s not good for people who actually need that advice. they also clearly seethe at people whose ED makes them thin. I sometimes cynically wonder if they’d say my suicidal underweight self had more « thin privilege » than I do now.
