Older Desis of this sub, how is being an ABD today different from when you where younger?

  1. Every older kid seemed to be a doctor/engineer. A lot of small parties of just indian people. I have fond memories of 3-4am nights where our parents were still talking and we tried convincing them of sleepovers. Significant racism in school post 9/11 (lived in NYC at the time). Dating was taboo. Personally had older cousins who had to lie about it (ie my aunt/uncle still have no clue that my cousin was dating her husband for years before she introduced him to her parents, now they have 3 kids). Funny thing is someone I know whose a hot-shot doctor now used to come home drunk or high in high school sometimes on a Saturday night when his parents held parties. I never understood why he quickly walked up the stairs and locked his door/took shower. I always found it funny it he never was really judged for his "party animal" antics (he got shitfaced at his wedding) just because he has an MD and part of a very competitive specialty. Yeah he's a doctor but even today, he can be a frat boy partying bumbling moron even in his late 30s.
  2. Many many kids pursue different careers. I know a ton of ABDs in finance, law, tech, and a lot of other industries. Parents are realizing how demanding medicine really is as a career rather than looking at it with a "flowery view." Dating is not nearly as taboo. Friend of mine is living with his fiance for years (aka his parents are aware they are sexually active). Probably helps both are MDs and residents in training aka they have a very "stable" future. Worse = Easier access for noisy aunties/uncles who are trying to figure out what other kids are doing. Aka through facebook/instagram/asking their kids what "That kid" is up to.
