People who have been in car chases, what happened?

A few years ago I blew a red light while speeding in front of a cop and decided to test my driving skills. I live in NYC and back then the speed limit was 35 mph everywhere.

On this day in particular I was in some sort of a rush, can't remember why, but it was urgent nonetheless. So for the extent of my drive I was guilty of the usual traffic douchebaggery in New York (i.e. going around slowpokes, boxing out at red lights, exercising drag-race reflexes etc.). I get to a stretch of road that's 3 lanes on each side with a median-island in the middle. I'm going 60 mph and make the first light, just barely make the second, and I see the last one turn red about 100 yards ahead. I had ample time to stop, but my adrenaline sent me through the intersection, between two cars crossing, at about 75 mph. Just as I start to marvel at my own retardation, I see a fucking patrol car in the median facing me. What's worse is that I locked eyes with the cop as I passed him. I glance at the rear view mirror and sure as shit he's fired up and starting to turn around. Oncoming traffic tied him up enough to not be directly behind me, buying me enough space for him to lose sight of me. The road after the cop goes over a bridge and then immediately forks in two directions, so I whipped down one block, then another, snaked through side streets before heading to a completely different neighborhood than I needed to go because I was paranoid about getting caught.

In the end I got away, but the whole ordeal could have got me in a lot of trouble (I imagine) and ended up making me late because I didn't want to leave my car in the same neighborhood as where I figured the cop would be looking.
