“Not All Men”

Honestly, being understanding and not judging women for simply being cautious is a huge first step. I used to walk everywhere (didn’t have a car) and sometimes I’d get home late. I’ve literally had guys approach me, a girl just under 5 feet, as I’m walking alone on an unlit path (there are no other options). It’s completely unnecessary to approach someone for social reasons, as one might on a sunny day, on what could potentially be the setting for a horror movie. And while none were rude there’s always the fear that it was all an act and he’ll react badly to me backing out of whatever conversation he tried to start. We’re not asking much. Even I, as unintimidating as I am, pull my phone out, slow down, or pass someone up if I think it may seem like I’m following them. I’m not saying hold a sign up that says “I swear I’m not stalking you” or even necessarily go out of your way to cross the street. Simply having some empathy and awareness is enough.
