People Who Bring Mentally Challenged People Shopping So They Can Have a Fun Day: Please Stay with Them

Society supports developmentally challenged people to live as independently as possible. This is what makes a great society compassionate. It seems you just received some of the training that will make you better dealing with those who need support to maintain their dignity.

As others have pointed out, this seems to be a person who is close to being able to interact on a functional level. Even those who are not trained to deal with autistic or otherwise disabled people quickly recognize, as you did, that some accommodation is necessary. You weren't trained to do so, but now you will be better at it. As in all things.

It is not practical, or desirable, that people such as you describe have a full-time caregiver to ensure no awkward interactions happen. This is not how they will grow, nor how the broader community with whom they interact will become more accepting.

It sounds like you did just fine. No meltdown, no traumatic intervention, just a person used to routines a little out of their comfort zone.
