Pharrell's reaction to this girls song is so genuine, I love it

I think the line is actually "And I walked off you, and I walked off an old me."

So the song is about a relationship that ended, but we only know that at the exact point you felt feelings.

Up to that point she's setting the scene. The lyrics are hot and heavy, romanticized to an almost eye-rolling degree - Walking through a stream of glacial runoff that takes you breath away, very pastoral and beautiful, like a verbal lute of sorts. The melody is rolling and sweet. It's romantic and full and over the top. And then she simply drops the hammer with a very under-written, monotone, conversational line - I walked you off. We find out the song is not about love, it's about the loss of love (and later finding love for one's self).

The lyrical and melodic structure mimics how a relationship ending can feel in that single verse; one day you're in love, holding hands and cuddling and talking every few hours...there are lots of different notes, if you will. Then in one conversation it's gone. The next day the number is deleted from your phone and you're accidentally buying enough groceries to make dinner for two, but you can't stomach the thought of staring at your leftovers the next day in front of everyone thinking "this was his/her portion" so you throw out the extra.

Musically, in the beginning of the verse she's got a very pretty rolling melody going when she's setting the scene, then at that point the verse becomes almost monotone. One note. Staccato'd a bit. That's when my stomach dropped as well, the response you're getting is coming from the contrast between the beginning of the verse to that change...she's setting you up for that emotion there.

I agree with you, this isn't just a good song - it's a smart song, it's a song you experience with more than just your ears. Can't wait to hear more.
