Player wants TW before something I can't control

Why is that a trigger, but discussing it being a trigger isn’t a trigger? I’m confused by the logistics of it. They know you’re doing a ship session already, and the likelihood of getting wet is high. In my mind, the tw has been said already. And what is achieved by you saying “trigger warning” before telling the story? You give them two extra seconds to run through their past trauma before returning to play? I mean… do the words “trigger warning” not immediately become trigger words themselves? They force the memory of specific trauma to integrate into the players response… eradicating every chance that they might be having enough fun to move with the moment, without even realising they missed an opportunity to be negatively affected. I don’t have the answer to this problem. People covet their pain. I’m certainly not innocent of it myself. But there’s gotta be something better than regularly saying “trigger warning” and looking across the table momentarily at them. Maybe they just want to create a fluid chance to tell the story of this trigger to the table?
