[Podcast] We're Listening - Episode 090 - Mixed Doubles

Hey guys! I’ve listened to all the episodes and it just keeps getting better and better. Great job!

First time commenting in a while but since sports was mentioned (and that’s my area of expertise outside of Frasier), I figured I’d offer my two cents.

For Babe Ruth and No No Nanette, it is NOT true. It’s a myth. Here’s an article from the New York Times on it (https://www.nytimes.com/2004/09/24/sports/baseball/a-myth-that-should-not-be-perpetuated.html). The “Say it Ain’t So, Joe!” is a myth as well. The kid who said it lived until the late 80s or early 90s and claimed it happened when “Shoeless” Joe Jackson was coming out of the courthouse for the trial. Interestingly, there’s actually video of Jackson coming out of the courthouse when the guy claimed it happened … and there’s no kid there. Also, interestingly, all of the “Black Sox” (nicknamed that since they were blackballed (Frasier voice: BLACKBALL!!!!” from baseball. But all that were charged were found innocent in court but the next day, all were banned from baseball. Jackson played extremely well in the World Series but as a result of the “scandal”, he was banned anyways and he, despite being one of the best players in MLB history, he is not in the Hall of Fame.

Here’s a short show about it from the mid 2000s on ESPN about it (https://youtu.be/IYVs4Cw6oB4). It’s a contrarian show to show the other side of history so it’s a good view from the other side. They also did another episode on the Red Sox/Babe Ruth thing too (https://youtu.be/vqobfmIxt4M).

For the White Sox, they also did a book and, eventually, a movie about it called Eight Men Out. It was released in 1988 and one of the stars? John Mahoney (as the manager of the White Sox).

However, “The Curse of the Bambino” is true. They went from 1918 until 2004 until they won another World Series. They’ve made up time though as they won again in 2007, 2013, and 2018.

The White Sox had their own curse at they only got to the World Series once between 1919 (the Black Sox scandal) and 2005, when they won it. They made it but lost in 1959.

As for the episodes, completely agree on Season 4. Already great episodes and many more to come.

Keep up the great work! Until next time, off I go!
