Police officers of Reddit, who had to inform a child's parents about child's crime, what was it like?

I've got a personal story but with a twist. I had taken my parents car out for a joy ride on night after being grounded, I was 16 and dumb as hell. They knew, went through my AOL messages, twas a long time ago, and printed the conversations about me and my friends stealing beer from garages over spring break instead of the conversation with my gf about picking her up that night. They called the cops, handed them over all the evidence and when I was arrested at the house they told me they hope I had a good lawyer. I almost spent 16 years in prison. My parents thought the cops would give me a slap on the wrist and tell me not to do that again. $100k bond on 4 charges of 1st degree B&E. The cops were shocked my parents turned me in and felt bad for me. They assured me they would put in a good word for being cooperative.
