Pot legalization has widespread, growing support

I could be happy with that last part, even though I don't really drink much anymore.

That is indeed the real clincher. The current tack is that there will be enough state legalization pressure to force the Executive branch to make changes (legislative branch too - the Controlled Substances Act and it's subsidiary legislation needs to be repealed) to the DEA and to scheduling and the scheduling process. There's no guarantee that will happen - especially with Obama's near-silence on the issue and Biden's fervent opposition to the idea of legalization of cannabis. Clinton has shown to be in the same camp, so I expect more of the same there. She did talk about criminal justice reform, I hope that this is part of it but I don't have high hopes.

I just think the drug war is a lost cause completely, and all it's doing now is acting as an egregious affront to US citizens civil rights, in addition to having empowered private armies throughout Latin America. There's an enormous problem south of our border and while they may have struck out into non-narcotic ventures (like stealing oil...) much of it was funded with US dollars from terrible legislation and executive action.
