Promotion rate thoughts: Retiring as a MSgt at 20 years is only an extra ~$4k/yr more in retired pay than a TSgt. Just saying.

Sounds like you’ve got a pretty awesome spouse my guy!

In own experience, and the experiences of those around me, SNCOs most often work extra hours and carry work home to keep the shop running while staying competitive for promotion. I know that my own spouse would not be able to do kids & college/work if I wasn’t able to take over 100% at the end of the day and on weekends on a consistent basis. If she’s got something big coming up I can take leave and not have to worry about the state of things while I’m gone. As you said, this is anecdotal evidence, but childcare is one of the largest factors listed for military spouse unemployment and underemployment in several studies (next to PCSing). Shit is crazy difficult for them (statistically speaking), and being home with consistent hours does wonders to give them the time they need to grow in their professional lives.
