[RANT] Why I like the prequels more

I agree with a couple of things. Firstly, the prequels get too much hate. I totally see where people can be disappointed, even to a large degree, and I respect that. However, to say they're some of the worst movies ever made is really pushing it. I think there's a lot bad going on, but they're not Battlefield Earth or Movie 43 or Catwoman or anything like that.

There's a lot going on in the prequels that is good. The music is phenomenal, many of the visual effects (especially from Revenge of the Sith) hold up well, a lot of the action is very cool, and there are certainly some interesting plot elements.

All that said, I really can't tell myself that they're great movies. Fun to watch from time to time, but not great, and I personally like the originals a lot more.

The reason for that, is execution. George Lucas is a master storyteller and world-builder, but he's kind of a crap writer and director. The prequels have some truly cringe-worthy dialogue coming from wooden performances (a lot of the time from really good actors), and that's because of Lucas' direction. He's not good with actors at all, and there's not much dynamism to his camera movements. It just all feels very still.

So yeah, I like the prequels just fine when they're firing on the right cylinders, but they aren't firing on the cylinders enough for me to really say I love them like I do the originals.

And, of course, like most everyone else, I am still very excited about The Force Awakens. I love the cast they've assembled, I trust Disney, I've loved all of J.J. Abrams' films (really), and the trailers (where's the next one?!) certainly show me a lot of what I want from Star Wars.
