[US] Is it realistic to make a stable living from home?

Most major airlines have work from home reps who work in reservations. You may have to commit to X number of weeks of training in an office at their training facility, but the pay is good and the benefits are great (even flight benefits), depending on the airline, you may be issued company stock, profit sharing, and small annual raises (due to cost of living or just to keep even non union employees on par with union employees).

I called Alaska Airlines and the woman I was talking to was in Des Moines or wherever. American has reservations offices all over. Delta, United, Jet Blue...

It's not even that hard. "Hi! Okay, your flight from New York to Paris will be $435. How would you like to pay for that? Wonderful! Have a great trip! Thanks for choosing Reddit Airways!" It might get complicated if you've got an award ticket going through zones and blah blah, but the airline will train you to know everything you need to know.

It's call center work, even though you're working from home, for a 24/7 operation, so you can kind of work any shift you want and trade shifts with people. I remember when I was on the phones (ages ago), I would trade shifts and build in weeks off without even using any vacation days. You can work as much or as little as you want because there's always people wanting to pick up hours or give away hours.

If you can be pleasant and upbeat, even in the face of mass cancellations due to storms and having to work with people to reroute them, I highly recommend it. The travel industry and commercial aviation isn't for everyone but I enjoy it and if you want to work from home, there are lot of telework options.
