Religious right suddenly decides morality’s not important in politics: How in the world did that happen?

There's this story I read in a book once. See there was this guy that everyone thought was pretty cool and had some good ideas. We'll call him Joe. And this guy had a follower, we'll call, him, I don't know, Pete.

So Pete goes to Joe and says "Hey, Joe, you're pretty cool." And Joe tell Pete "By this time tomorrow you'll deny you even know me." and Pete says "No way, I'd never do that!"

So the government, they actually don't think Joe is all that cool. So they arrest him, and not just him, but anyone who thinks he is cool. So when the cops come to Pete and ask if they know Joe and if he's cool, Pete gets scared. He doesn't want to get in trouble. So he lies. He says he doesn't know Joe. Never heard of him. Joe isn't cool at all.

You see, Pete was all over Joe when it was safe. When it was convenient. But as soon as he was forced to put his beliefs on the line, as soon as he was forced to take a stand and possibly sacrifice something, he changed his mind. And then Pete realized he was never really a big fan of Joe after all. He was a hypocrite because he wasn't willing to stand for what he believed in.

It's a pretty cool story. I don't really remember the book it was in, but maybe some of these Religious people should read it.
