I used to love drag shows. In my city, there are multiple venues that hold competitions, and they were almost always fun.
That said...
I knew and was in the same circle with one of the winners of RDG, who was probably the most famous performer in the world at that point (when SN won, the bar [Blue Moon] I was at that had it on tv went nuts, including me, as it was the very bar he [I'm not going to use his real name] used to perform at before he got famous).
I was sexually harrassed and groped multiple times in public, with other people watching, by people in this orbit. It was firstly gay men at gay bars who felt entitled to do this because I'm not a gay man, and I think the logic was that I wouldn't be turned on by it, so it didn't count. It was uncomfortable to say the least. Another one of them was actually a straight woman, with our other women friends watching and neither doing nor saying absolutely nothing in response, which occured at the Brillo Box around 2013.
Besides being super-sexualized performances themselves, the sexualization didn't end at the door. It was an entire culture that carried over into Pride, house parties, and just random weekday hangouts. There were massive amounts of drugs and alcohol involved in all of them.
One of my ex-friends that was 2nd or 3rd in command in that circle, who had previously worked with SN (at the old Party City on Baum Blvd.), groped me at a gay bar in Oakland, also on Baum (SN was there, but he didn't see it), after we took MDMA together, and later went into the porn industry posting inappropriate shit on his Facebook. These people aren't just innocent radicals being subversive against gender norms. They are horny and weird and shouldn't be around kids.
I just don't understand liberals who want to die on this hill of making this actually existing astonishing and oftentimes abusive culture child-adjacent.
In my experience, most of the people who want to introduce children to queen culture are liberals who were never involved in the scene in the first place, and just want to own the Republicans. Most people I know who ran in those circles are left-leaning people who would think this shit is inappropriate for kids, except for the queens themselves, for whatever reason.
