Rep. Ilhan Omar said this on Twitter, and a mainstream Islamic subreddit got upset

When I stand in support of this community, I'm standing against their basic human rights being revoked. I take a moment to acknowledge the centuries of abuse and persecution they've had to face and pay my respects. udice and deal with harassment on a daily basis. They are evicted from their homes, are fired from their jobs, do not have an equal access to employment, face workplace harassment, are not allowed to donate blood, deal with inequality in housing, healthcare, public accommodations, denied goods and services.

Do Muslims not support Alcoholics? Do we not support drug addicts? Do we not offer them respect, do we not refrain from discriminating?

Consuming alcohol and drugs is haram, yet we do not go out of our way to discriminate against people who partake in such. They are still deserving of respect and basic human dignity.

When I stand in support of pride month, when I stand in support of my queer friends, I'm standing in solidarity and am advocating against persecution and human rights violations. LGBTQ individuals face a lot of prejudice and deal with harrassment on a daily basis. They are evicted from their homes, are fired from their jobs, do not have an equal access to employment, face workplace harrassment, are not allowed to donate blood, deal with inequality in housing, healthcare, public accomodations, denied goods and services.

When I stand in support of this community, I'm standing against their basic human rights being revoked. I take a moment to acknowledge the centuries of abuse and persecution they've had to face and pay my respects. I take a moment to read up on their history and the great achievements queer individuals have brought upon humanity, their inventions, their ideas, their contributions to prevent from their erasure.
