Roommate [23F] and I [23F] own a cat together, but I've decided to move out. She's asking me to continue paying for the cat even though she's keeping it.

I disagree. I dont know your area, and it is possible people around you dont value animal life very highly. In my experience, former owners leave in tears and constantly call to check in on their former animals. We have great resources and tons of programs. We have a strong network of fosters, dedicated volunteers, a great behavioral staff supplemented with outside trainers, programs to provide owners with discounted or free food and medical care, and yet we still get people beating dogs to death or strangling cats because they do not think they have any other options and didnt want their animal to "suffer and die in a shelter". That's why I hate black and white opinions on these matters. I dont want to scare away anyone from walking through our doors to at least check out their options. Obviously I am not advocating for careless adoptions and surrenders, but there are good places out there and spreading the idea that all surrenderers are bad people and all shelters are kill-mills isn't going to help in the long run.
