Great picture, but "Diegueño" is quite literally a slave name. The title reads "A Santa Ysabel Woman--San Diegan Slave (aka Kumeyaay)."

It was given by colonizers to a people stolen from their homes, enslaved in the missions, and forced to assimilate to European culture (i.e. Kill the indian, save the man). Diegueño is offensive, please do not use it to refer to the Kumeyaay people. Instead, when you see old descriptions using "Diegueño," perhaps let yourself be reminded of the enslavement, genocide, and removal that took place to clear the way for this city and remember that the Kumeyaay people are still here.

The name they chose for themselves, Kumeyaay, means "the people who stand on cliffs facing westward". They also call themselves "Mutt tipai" or "Ipai", which mean "people of the Earth" in various dialects. San Diego County has the highest concentration of Indian reservations in the United States. Thousands of Kumeyaay people are still living in San Diego county. It is extremely important to these 17 tribal nations that people stop referring to them by their slave name.

Also, fun fact: "La Jolla" is the Spanish nickname for the area's ancient cultural name: "Mutt Lahoy" which means "land of many caves." I never see anyone get that right.
