Portugal suffered (still suffers but that's another topic) from an issue that is called "centralism". In the past, everything that was worth mentioning happened in Lisbon and for a long time, 2 teams from Lisbon dominated our league (until 1974, Portugal was under a dictatorship, and football was used a lot of times as propaganda). Porto tried to fight but we always had issues "crossing the river" (meaning going down south to play against teams from the center and south of Portugal) playing and competing against those teams.

When the dictatorship ended, funny enough, Porto started winning titles as well (Porto had 5 titles until 74, Benfica, Sporting and Belenenses had the rest) and started dominating the league and ending up winning the European Cup in 87.

Os Belensenses won their only title in 46 and Boavista won 1 time in 2001.
