[Serious] Redditors who have either witnessed or caused a negligent discharge- what specifically happened?

Was at the range with my dad. It was a bare bones range, the type where they call ceasefire so you can walk out and retrieve your target. No overhead rails or anything like that.

Anyway my dad (and probably a half dozen other people) were down range retrieving their targets. When suddenly BANG. Someone a few stalls down discharged. And I felt my heart climb in my throat as I saw my dad hit the ground.

Fortunately he was fine. He just heard the gunshot and dove for the ground. No one was injured thankfully. But that was one of the scarier, heart skips a beat, moments I've had.

Some kid, maybe 13, was handling his weapon, which is a big no-no when ceasefire is called. You're supposed to set your gun on the bench and step away. Kid had been fiddling with the action on his rifle and I guess he must have had shit trigger discipline too.

Both the kid's dad (who was also downrange and started cussing up a storm) and the RSO both made a b-line for the kid. The RSO ejected both the kid and his dad, and the dad slapped the kid around a bit in the parking lot. Which, was not cool, but then again neither is nearly killing people.

Only time I've ever seen an accidental discharge.
